Valentine’s Day Is For Donors, Too. Show your donors some love

When was the last time you told your donors you love them? (Okay, maybe not those exact words — but you know what I mean.)

Valentine’s Day is a perfect opportunity to connect with your supporters and show a little heartfelt appreciation. No big campaign. No ask. Just a warm message that reminds them they matter.

And here’s the best part — it doesn’t have to be fancy or polished. In fact, it shouldn’t be. This is one of those moments where done is better than perfect, and genuine is more powerful than glossy.

Here’s what I want you to do:

This week, take five minutes to draft and schedule a quick email to your donors. Something short, simple, and real. Just a sweet reminder that their support matters, and that they’re part of something meaningful.

Need a little inspiration? Here are a few donor love notes you could use as a base:

On this Valentine’s Day, we just want you to know how much you mean to us. Our mission wouldn’t be possible without your support!”
“Because you share your heart with us, hundreds of [animals/children/individuals] feel loved today. And we want you to feel that love, too.”
“You’ve made such a difference this year already. We couldn’t let today pass without saying THANK YOU — from the bottom of our hearts.”

Add a couple of lines about what their support has meant recently. Keep it donor-centered. No program jargon. Just connection.

Be sure to include a Valentine-themed graphic. I made the graphics below in Canva in five minutes (all three!). Again, it’s not about perfection — it’s about presence.

Why It Matters

People want to feel appreciated. Donors included. Especially during times of year when inboxes are filled with marketing messages and commercial noise, a genuine note from a nonprofit they support stands out.

Plus, a donor who feels valued is more likely to keep giving, open your next email, and share your work with a friend. This kind of small, meaningful touchpoint strengthens your relationship over time.

A Few Quick Tips for Sending Donor Valentines:

  • Personalize it – Even a small tweak (like using their first name or referencing their past gift) makes the message feel more personal.

  • Skip the ask – This isn’t about donations. It’s about appreciation. Let them simply enjoy being thanked.

  • Add a visual – Something that makes them smile.

  • Include your signature – Make sure they know it came from a real person, not just "The Organization."

  • Send early in the day – So they see it before they’re buried in chocolate and flower emojis from everyone else.

If you want to go a step further, this is a lovely day to post a donor love graphic on social media, too. Something like “We love our supporters!” or “You make our hearts full.”

The goal here isn’t to check a box. It’s to stay in a relationship with the people who make your work possible.

Still Not Sure What to Send?

If you’re building a donor relations plan and want to sprinkle in more thoughtful moments like this throughout the year, I’d love to brainstorm with you.

Let’s talk — schedule a free discovery call today, and let’s build a donor love strategy that works all year long.
